Hello!!! Welcome to my weekly yoga sessions to soothe the mind, body, and soul. This is Priyanka.V and today lemme share with you the tremendous benefits of Jala Neti kriya that you should inculcate in your daily routine.

So without further ado, let's get started.

WHAT IS JALA NETI?

Neti kriya is an integral part of shatkarmas/the six cleansing techniques that form the most important aspect of hatha yoga.

Here,

Jala means 'Water'

Neti means 'Cleansing'.

So, Jala Neti is the Yogic system of body cleansing techniques. It is an excellent Practice to clear your Nasal track, beneficial for people suffering from Sinusitis. It facilitates smooth Breathing through the nostril and thus keeping you free from all kinds of diseases.

Jal Neti helps keep you safe from many diseases and also encourages smooth breathing exchange through the nostril.

It is a simple yet effective technique to cure all your Nasal related problems. And very helpful in dealing with seasonal allergies.

PREPARATION NEEDED TO PERFORM JALA NETI (Jal Neti preparation):

To perform Jala Neti  you need the following:

a) A Neti Pot.

b) Lukewarm saline water.

BEST TIME TO PERFORM JALA NETI:

c) A towel.

d) Empty stomach.

Jala Neti should be performed on an empty stomach during the morning time.

WHY YOU NEED TO ADD SALT TO THE WATER?

Adding salt builds osmotic pressure, which helps in avoiding the flow of water into the Nasal Membranes.

WHAT SHOULD BE THE TEMPERATURE OF WATER AND PRESCRIBED QUANTITY OF SALT.

The temperature of the water used should be between 38 to 40 Degree celsius.

Quantity of Salt: About one teaspoon of salt per one liter of water.

(Note: When you taste the water prepared for Jala Neti, it should taste similar to your tears.)

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU DO JALA NETI?

You can practice this most day like it can be around  3 to 4 times a week. It does not necessarily have to be done daily. But, If you are prone to allergies or Sinuses then do this more often.

HOW TO DO JALA NETI:

a) Stand relaxed with legs apart, Now bend slightly like we do in chair pose keeping a space between the feet at about roughly 1 or 1.5 feet. Lean forward. Take the neti pot in your right hand and your left hand should be placed at your left thigh.

c) Now tilt the head towards the left side(upto 45 degrees) as we are going to start from the right nostril first.

d) Insert the nozzle of the Neti Pot into the right nostril and open your mouth.  Let the water flow in through the right nostril and out through the left nostril.

e) Make sure that your mouth should be kept open throughout the Neti process.

f) Once you are done with the right nostril. Repeat the same process with the left nostril.

g) After finishing the process from both sides, do 3 rounds of Kapalbhati (i.e. 60 times * 3 sets).

(Note: You can also Practice this kriya sitting in Kagasana pose).

WHY YOU NEED TO DO KAPALBHATI AFTER JALA NETI?

After performing Jala Neti Kriya Make sure that you always practice Kapalbhati pranayama to dry the nasal region.

Jala Neti cleansing is that most people believe that the practice ends after pouring the water in and out of your nostrils. But this is not true. A big part of the practice that's often missed is getting the leftover water out of the nasal passages. And hence we Practice Kapalbhati kriya to remove the leftover water out of the nostrils.

Note: Take care that you do not leave any water in the nasal passages as it might cause an infection.

BENEFITS OF JALA NETI:

Like all other Yoga asanas or Pranayamas Neti too has got multiple benefits. Some of them are as follows.

a) Jala Neti helps in curing Sinusitis, nose and throat infection, tonsillitis, inflammation of the adenoids, mucus membranes, as well as the ailments of the eyes.

b) Relieves Headache. It has a positive influence on all sense organs in the head and hence it also cures migraine.

j) With regular use, Neti can also cure or ease out the pollen allergies.

k) Improves vision. This technique is also very helpful to keep eyes healthy. Jala Neti keeps the eyes free from congestion and strain and hence improves vision.
